The Scent
Jasmine registers first, and it is not the powdery, soapy jasmine most florals lean on. This is the greener, more indolic side of the flower, slightly narcotic, with a petal-crush quality that reads as fresh-cut rather than perfumed. Within minutes the Craven A tobacco accord moves in underneath it, dry and leafy, closer to the inside of a cigar box than to smoke. The pairing is the whole point of this fragrance: jasmine keeps trying to smell pretty and the tobacco keeps pulling it back toward something darker and more textured. Vanilla arrives soon after, but it never turns this into a gourmand. It rounds the tobacco's edges and adds a faint warmth, like the residue of sugar on cured leaf, without adding sweetness you would call dessert-like. Elemi sits quietly at the base the entire time, giving the composition a resinous, slightly peppery lift that keeps the tobacco from going flat or ashy. The transition through the first hour is the most interesting part: the jasmine that felt dominant on application recedes, and the tobacco-vanilla combination takes over the foreground, growing creamier and drier at once. Some skin brings out more of the tobacco's leathery, almost bitter facet, while other skin lets the vanilla soften it into something closer to a spiced floral. Both readings are legitimate, and neither cancels the other out. By the dry-down, jasmine returns as a whisper rather than a statement, mostly there to keep the tobacco from smelling like an accord in isolation. What remains is warm, dry, faintly resinous, and unmistakably built rather than blended by accident.
