Outlands arrived in 2024 in Amouage's The Essences collection and sold out on release, which tells you how well Cécile Zarokian read the room. It is the brand at its most accessible, a spicy woody that opens bright and citrusy before settling into the resinous amber-oud Amouage is known for. The Essences are aged for months and packed at thirty percent oil, so there is real density to it. The Outlands decant in Bangladesh is stocked at Aromatica for a bold Amouage that stays easy to wear.

The Scent

The first impression is unexpectedly light for Amouage, a zesty lemon and bergamot dusted with cardamom and a prickly Sichuan pepper. Elemi and frankincense sit underneath from the start, adding a soft resinous glow that hints at where the scent is going. As the citrus burns off, a rich, multi-faceted patchouli takes over the heart, green and humid and the real engine of the composition. Spices weave through it, with saffron and cumin adding warmth and a little skin-like depth, while rose and orange blossom soften the edges. The base is classic Amouage, an amber accord built on balsams and resins, with benzoin, labdanum and a quiet oud rounding it out. Frankincense returns in the dry-down, tying the bright opening to the warm finish. Wearers consistently call out the striking contrast between the fresh top and the deep base, with the middle hours often singled out as the best part. It is performance-heavy, as Amouage tends to be, and reads bang-on unisex. The common comparison is to African Leather for the cardamom-pepper opening.
