Ambergris Showers opens on tangerine and violet leaves before galbanum sharpens the edges, and the whole thing settles into a leather that reads more austere than sweet. The Scent
Tangerine hits first, bright and a little tart, but galbanum shows up almost immediately to cut the sweetness with something bitter and green. Violet leaves add a cool, papery quality that keeps the opening from feeling like a typical citrus rush. Within the first twenty minutes the fruit fades and mate steps forward, a dry, slightly smoky tea-like note that changes the whole direction of the fragrance. Clary sage joins it with an herbal, almost hay-like warmth, and together they build a heart that feels more savory than floral or gourmand. This is where the surprise sits: instead of pushing toward sweetness or spice, the composition turns austere and mineral, closer to a well-worn saddle than a modern leather accord. The transition from top to heart never feels abrupt, since galbanum's green bitterness lingers long enough to hand off to mate's dry smokiness, and the violet leaves seem to fold quietly into that same cool, papery register rather than dropping out entirely. As the mate and clary sage settle, styrax starts to surface underneath, bringing a resinous, faintly smoky depth that bridges the herbal heart into the base. On skin, the clary sage softens before the mate does, so for a while the tea-like dryness stands alone with only a trace of hay left behind. Leather arrives last and takes over fully, dry and a little smoky rather than sweet or animalic, with vetiver adding an earthy, rooty backbone that keeps it grounded. Styrax never turns syrupy the way it can in warmer compositions, instead staying resinous and restrained, more a shadow behind the leather than a note in its own right. Rasasi Hawas Fire opens on that same clary sage, though there it leads into jasmine and marine notes rather than mate and styrax.
The drydown reads austere and composed, leather and vetiver locked together with a whisper of styrax resin left from the transition, and reactions to that dryness genuinely split people between those who find it commanding and those who wanted more warmth.
When to Wear
This belongs in cooler months, on evenings that call for a blazer rather than a t-shirt, think business dinners, gallery openings, or a formal reception. The dry leather and vetiver base reads best after sundown, when there's less heat to push the mate and clary sage into something sharper.
