The Scent
The raspberry that defined the original is nearly gone here, left only as a faint tartness beneath the spice. Saffron leads the opening instead, sharper and more concentrated than in the 2007 version, with thyme adding a green, almost medicinal edge. Davana brings a dry, slightly boozy fruitiness that keeps the top from turning sweet. The thyme and davana keep tugging against the saffron in the first few minutes, so the opening never fully sweetens. Within the first hour the leather takes over, and it is a taut black leather rather than the warm brown suede many associate with Tom Ford. Olibanum and woods deepen it into something smoky and resinous. The suede rounds the edges enough to keep it close and wearable rather than harsh. Sprayed on fabric it holds the smoky leather longer than on skin, where the animalic warmth arrives sooner. As it dries down, amber and animalic notes settle into a low, skin-close warmth that reviewers often describe as raw and primal.
