Common Questions
Good to know
-
They sit at opposite ends of the house's warmth. Tobacco Vanille is sweet and enveloping, tobacco leaf and spice over vanilla, cacao and tonka with dried fruit. Noir is dry and grainy: bergamot and violet flower, black pepper, nutmeg and iris resin through the heart, then opoponax, patchouli, vetiver and a trace of civet. Vanilla is in the base only as a floor, not the subject. See Tobacco Vanille.
-
They move in opposite directions. Iris resin stays cool and powdery on warm skin, keeping the middle composed in humidity where a sweeter oriental would collapse. The civet in the base is the note that gains, coming forward sooner and reading more animalic in heat, which reads as either the appeal or the problem depending on personal taste. Bergamot and verbena give a brief lift and then vanish.
-
It can be, for the wrong skin. Civet lends the base a faintly animalic, skin-like warmth that some wearers find genuinely addictive and others find uncomfortably raw, and that split shows up sharply once the dry-down settles in. If you already know animalic notes unsettle you, sample the full development before choosing Noir as an introduction to the house.
-
Yes, that comparison is deliberate. Noir carries the character of a darker, more modern Habit Rouge, reinterpreting that same classic resinous DNA through Tom Ford's more structural, iris-and-civet-driven lens. If you already appreciate Habit Rouge or Shalimar-style dry spicy ambers, Noir gives that lineage a contemporary designer treatment. See Habit Rouge.
-
The civet-driven dry-down is the part most likely to divide opinion, reading as addictive to some and slightly uncomfortable to others, and that single phase defines much of the fragrance's character. Sampling the 3ml to 9ml range lets you sit through the full arc from the citrus-violet opening to that animalic base before spending on a complete bottle.
-
Noir is frequently compared to Dior Homme Intense, since both center on a powdery iris theme. Noir builds its iris in a spicier, denser structure, layered with black pepper, nutmeg, and Bulgarian rose, then closes on opoponax, patchouli, and civet for an animalic warmth. Dior Homme Intense keeps a cleaner lavender opening and lets iris and ambrette sit alone against cedar and vetiver, staying softer and more linear. Noir reads darker and more resinous, while the comparator stays powdery and restrained throughout.
