How is Sauvage Extrait different from Sauvage Elixir?
What does the Vietnamese oud actually add to it?
Read the full description
Notes, the scent, when to wear, and who it is for.
For a scent this famous, adding something genuinely new is the hard part. Dior Sauvage Extrait, released in 2026 as the line's first extrait de parfum, manages it with oud. Francis Kurkdjian keeps the lavender and bergamot signature everyone knows but drops a Vietnamese oud into the heart, then dries it down over cedar and vetiver. It is the woodiest, smokiest Sauvage yet.
Fragrance Notes
Top: Ambroxan, Lavender, Bergamot
Heart: Vietnamese Oud
Base: Virginia Cedar, Atlas Cedar, Vetiver, Patchouli

The Scent
The opening will feel familiar to anyone who knows the line. Bergamot and French lavender give the clean, aromatic Sauvage signature, and ambroxan supplies that mineral, radiant freshness that made the range a phenomenon. For the first few minutes it reads as a richer, denser version of what you expect. The lavender itself is also treated differently here, drier and slightly scorched at the edges rather than crisp and laundered.
Then the extrait shows its hand. A Vietnamese oud grows in the heart, bringing a leathery, faintly animalic depth that no other Sauvage has, and the base doubles down on it with Virginia and Atlas cedar, vetiver and Indonesian patchouli. The result is dry, smoky and woody, the aromatic freshness of the top now sitting on a genuinely dark foundation. Dior states the composition is matured for 42 days before bottling, and it wears as the most concentrated entry in the family. The drydown turns darker still, the vetiver picking up a salty, slightly dirty edge and the patchouli and cedar an ashy, tobacco-like smokiness, while the leather side of the oud reads as genuinely animalic rather than polished. Projection stays moderate rather than loud, but the trail is unusually persistent, often carrying into the next day as a quiet skin scent, and a few owners of Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade rank the two as comparably heavy on the oud.
When to Wear
This is a cold weather, evening interpretation of Sauvage. Fall and winter suit it best, for nights out, dates and dressed up occasions where you want the signature turned darker and richer. The concentration makes it a poor fit for hot, humid days, when the same oud and leather that feel rich in cool air can turn heavy instead.
Who Is It For
For Sauvage fans who want the signature pushed into serious woody, oud territory, and for anyone who likes the aromatic freshness of the line but wished it had more depth. If clean lavender over a smoky oud and cedar base sounds appealing, this is the version to try. It also appeals to someone who already owns an earlier Sauvage and wants a darker, dressier evening option, or to anyone who already wears dark oud and leather fragrances and wants one built on a familiar top note. Because the drydown carries so far, it rewards a lighter hand than the eau de toilette or Parfum.
Within the line, the closest relatives are Sauvage Elixir and Sauvage Parfum, both richer takes on the signature. For the same dark, leathery oud idea from another house, Montale Black Aoud makes a good comparison. Explore the full Dior range, or our woody collection for more scents built on cedar and vetiver.
Sauvage Extrait is available as a decant in 3ml and 5ml sizes.
