Description - Black Aoud
An oriental for the long evening. Genuine Montale Black Aoud EDP decant from ৳470 in Bangladesh. Notes of oud, labdanum and musk.

Few houses define a style as completely as Montale has with oud, and Black Aoud Eau de Parfum, released in 2006 and created by Pierre Montale himself, remains the clearest proof of that. It is a dark, uncompromising rose-and-oud composition that refuses to soften its edges for anyone. Aromatica carries the Montale Black Aoud decant in Bangladesh in all available sizes, so you can try this landmark fragrance without investing in a full bottle first.

Fragrance Notes

Top: Mandarin Orange

Heart: Rose

Base: Labdanum, Musk, Oud, Patchouli, Sandalwood

The Scent

Mandarin orange opens the fragrance with a brief citrus flash, almost medicinal in its brightness, lifting the initial spray before the real character of the composition steps forward. Within the first few minutes, a deeply smoky, resinous oud surges up and takes control, the kind of oud that reads raw and animalic rather than polished or sweet. This is Cambodian-style oud territory: dark, slightly barnyard, unapologetically funky to those who are not expecting it. Right alongside it, a velvety red rose emerges. Not a soft, dewy rose but a rich, almost bruised rose that leans into the darkness of the oud rather than contrasting with it. The two notes circle each other in the opening hour in a way that can read simultaneously abrasive and seductive. The oud can register as slightly synthetic against the rose, lending the combination a rubbery, watery edge; it can equally read as precisely what makes Black Aoud distinct in an overcrowded rose-oud market. Both impressions are valid and depend largely on skin chemistry and expectation. The mandarin does not disappear entirely in this phase but retreats to a faint brightness at the periphery, keeping the rose from going entirely dark. Patchouli enters mid-wear, grounding the accord with an earthy, slightly mossy depth that pulls the whole composition downward and away from anything floral-pretty. Labdanum adds a warm resinous sweetness, the kind that feels like amber without being sweet in any obvious way. It works quietly here, filling the space between the oud and the rose without announcing itself. The interplay between the labdanum and the rose is particularly effective: the resin keeps the floral note heavy and serious rather than allowing it to brighten and lift. As the fragrance settles into the dry-down, sandalwood and musk take over as a creamy, skin-close base that softens the earlier sharpness considerably. What started as raw and confrontational finishes as a warm, lingering skin scent with the rose and oud still present but much more intimate. The patchouli and labdanum remain faintly detectable even at this stage, contributing a low-level earthiness that keeps the base from going entirely soft. This is a fragrance with real arc: it earns its dry-down.

When to Wear

Black Aoud belongs to cooler months, autumn evenings and winter nights, when its dense, resinous character can breathe without clashing with heat. It fits formal dinners, late-night occasions, and any setting where a bold, room-announcing presence is appropriate rather than problematic.

Who Is It For

Already drawn to oud and looking for a version that centres a dark, serious rose rather than spice or sweetness? Black Aoud is built for that preference. It suits someone who wears fragrance as a deliberate statement and has no interest in blending into the background.

If you enjoy Aoud Night, Black Aoud sits in the same dark oud territory with more floral complexity and is a natural comparison. For a rose-oud pairing from a different house, Aoud Line by Mancera is worth testing side by side. Browse the full Montale collection at Aromatica.
