Description - Pearl Oud
Petal-soft and quietly distinct. Genuine Kilian Pearl Oud EDP decant from ৳1,237 in Bangladesh. Notes of rose, Turkish rose and ylang-ylang.

Kilian Pearl Oud (Eau de Parfum, 2015): Spiced Saffron and Rose over Animalic Oud and Castoreum

Kilian made Pearl Oud as a tribute to the brand's boutique in Doha, and the brief shows: this is a rose-oud aimed at a Middle Eastern sensibility, opulent and unafraid. Composed by Christian Provenzano in 2015, it pairs a luminous rose with a genuinely animalic base, which is rarer than the polished oud-rose template most houses settle for. It is bold and a little dirty in the best sense. The Pearl Oud decant in Bangladesh is stocked at Aromatica for anyone who wants their rose with some teeth.

Fragrance Notes

Top: Saffron, Black Pepper

Heart: Turkish Rose, Rose, Iris, Ylang-Ylang

Base: Oud, Castoreum

The Scent

The opening is sharp and spicy, a leathery saffron and a peppery bite that announce the scent before the flowers arrive. Within minutes a rich rose unfolds, both Turkish rose and a rounder rose accord, deep and slightly jammy rather than fresh and dewy. Iris adds a powdery, cool smoothness that tempers the rose, while ylang-ylang lends a creamy floral fullness underneath. The base is the part that separates Pearl Oud from softer rose-ouds, an animalic blend of oud and castoreum that turns leathery, salty and a little raw. The oud itself reads woody and smoky rather than barnyard, but the castoreum keeps the whole thing carnal. Reviewers describe it as a projection and longevity monster, one of the strongest performers in the lineup. Some find it challenging on first wear, while rose-oud lovers call it one of the best in the genre. It feels expensive and a touch theatrical, the smell of a heavy gold-capped bottle. This is cold-weather, special-occasion territory rather than an everyday spritz. The dry-down stays smoky and rosy for hours. The castoreum is what makes it divisive, lending a salty, almost leathery animal quality that some love and others find too raw. Iris does quiet work in the heart, adding a cool, powdery sheen that stops the rose from going jammy. The saffron and pepper opening is sharp enough to read as almost incense-like before the rose fully arrives. It is built like a fragrance meant to be noticed across a room, theatrical in the way the early Kilian ouds tended to be. Worn lightly it is gorgeous; worn heavily it can dominate, so restraint pays off. The rose stays sweet while the base turns dry and smoky, and that contrast is the whole appeal, luxurious and a little dangerous.

When to Wear

Save it for fall and winter evenings and dressed-up occasions where its power has room to breathe. It is far too strong for a hot afternoon or a quiet office.

Who Is It For

It fits someone who loves rose-oud and wants the animalic, full-strength version, and anyone drawn to opulent Middle Eastern style.

If you like Kilian's take on the note, Incense Oud (Batch 2012) runs smokier and drier and is worth comparing. Browse the full Kilian collection at Aromatica.
