Common Questions
Good to know
-
Because that is the production year of the stock behind this decant, worth stating for a fragrance launched in 2011 and discontinued since. L'Homme Libre is no longer a current YSL release, so what circulates is older stock, and a buyer choosing between bottles usually wants to know which era they are getting. The batch year identifies that, not a claim about quality.
-
Greener and drier throughout. L'Homme opens on ginger, bergamot and lemon and runs violet leaf, white pepper and basil over tonka bean, cedar and vetiver, staying warm and slightly powdery. L'Homme Libre leads with violet leaf and basil, adds star anise, and finishes on vetiver and patchouli with no tonka. L'Homme is the smoother of the two; Libre is sharper. See L’Homme (Batch 2015).
-
There is real overlap in the structure. Mercedes Benz Eau de Toilette lands on the same pepper-and-nutmeg heart sitting over a vetiver-and-patchouli base, though it gets there through lemon and mandarin plus violet and galbanum rather than L'Homme Libre's sharper, greener violet leaf opening. The destination is close; the route in is noticeably different.
-
It can read that way initially. Violet leaf here is not floral at all; it comes across as cool, bitter and intensely verdant, closer to a crushed stem than any flower, and basil adds a clean herbal sharpness right alongside it. Someone expecting a soft, familiar fresh masculine should know the first few minutes are deliberately sharp and green before the pink pepper and nutmeg heart warms things up.
-
Not directly. The green, bitter violet-leaf-and-basil opening that defines this fragrance was specific to its 2011 formula and era, and it was discontinued rather than folded into a current release. Y and La Nuit de l'Homme remain in the active catalogue if you want a currently produced YSL masculine, but neither reproduces this particular sharp, aromatic profile. See La Nuit de l’Homme.
-
Older discontinued stock varies more in perceived freshness than a current release, so testing before committing to a larger size matters more here than usual. Sampling the 3ml to 15ml range lets you confirm the violet leaf and star anise opening still reads sharp and green rather than flat, and that the vetiver-patchouli base holds up, before buying a bigger volume of aging stock.
-
L'Homme Libre is frequently compared to the Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Eau de Toilette; both share a violet leaf and pepper-spice heart, but Libre leans harder into star anise and basil for a greener, more untamed personality. The original keeps violet leaf subtler and pairs its white pepper with a fresher, more mineral vetiver, reading calmer and more restrained by comparison.
