Why is this labeled Batch 2015?

Because that is the production year of the stock behind this decant, and for a fragrance launched in 2011 that detail is worth stating rather than hiding. L'Homme Libre is no longer a current YSL release, so what circulates is older stock, and a wearer choosing between bottles usually wants to know which era they are getting. We list the batch year for that reason, not as a claim that any particular year smells better.

How is it different from L'Homme?

Greener and drier throughout. L'Homme opens on ginger, bergamot and lemon and runs violet leaf, white pepper and basil over tonka bean, cedar and vetiver, so it stays warm and slightly powdery. L'Homme Libre leads with violet leaf and basil themselves, adds star anise, and finishes on vetiver and patchouli with no tonka at all. L'Homme is the smoother of the two; Libre is the sharper and more aromatic.

Freedom, in fragrance form, looked like this in 2011. Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Libre is a Woody Spicy Eau de Toilette created by Olivier Polge and Carlos Benaim, launched as a flanker to the maison's iconic L'Homme but with a distinctly greener, more untamed personality. It was discontinued years ago, which makes vintage batches genuinely worth hunting down. The Scent

Violet leaf and bergamot arrive together, announcing a sharp green freshness that sets the tone immediately. The violet leaf here is not floral at all. It reads as cool, slightly bitter, and intensely verdant, more like a crushed stem than any flower. Basil adds a clean herbal sharpness alongside it, and star anise brings an almost medicinal sweetness that keeps the whole opening from smelling generic or safe.

Bergamot lifts everything in those first minutes, but it does not dominate. It acts as a brightening agent, letting the greener, stranger notes take the lead. This is where L'Homme Libre earns its name: it smells genuinely different from most masculine designer releases of its era, less of a safe crowd-pleaser and more of a considered statement about what fresh could actually mean.

As it warms on skin, the spicy heart of pink pepper and nutmeg emerges. The pepper is crisp and dry, adding bite without going sharp or harsh. Nutmeg is warmer, slightly dusty, and it bridges the fresh opening into the deeper base. The spice phase can read understated or deeply satisfying depending on skin chemistry, the point where L'Homme Libre starts to feel like a proper grown-up fragrance rather than a fresh citrus splash. Mercedes Benz Eau de Toilette works a similar pepper-and-nutmeg heart over a vetiver-and-patchouli base, opening instead on lemon and mandarin with violet and galbanum standing in for the violet leaf here.

Throughout the transition, the violet leaf never fully disappears. It threads through the heart phase as a cool, slightly bitter counterpoint to the warmth of the spice, and this tension is what makes the mid-stage interesting to wear.
