Released in 2017 as an Eau de Parfum, the gap between the two is not subtle. The result is a fragrance that feels genuinely niche: richer, heavier, and more challenging in the best possible way. The Scent
Almond and bergamot hit first, carrying a familiar brightness that fans of the original will recognise immediately. But something is different from the first minute: a watery, slightly cool quality sits alongside the citrus, adding an unexpected transparency that keeps the opening from feeling heavy despite what is coming. The apple accord registers softly beneath, more of a texture than a fruit note, with grapefruit lending a faint bitter edge that sharpens the opening without dominating it. Mandarin orange rounds everything out, keeping the top stage luminous and clean for several minutes before the composition begins its shift. Then the heart arrives and changes everything. Civet and cinnamon push forward together, turning the composition animalic and warm in a way that can genuinely surprise if you come in expecting the original Layton's easy elegance. Rose and gardenia are present but they are not floral in any light sense here: they read as rich, almost waxy, adding density rather than freshness. Geranium adds a slightly green, herbal contrast that keeps the heart from collapsing into pure sweetness. Water lily keeps a thin thread of cool restraint running through the mid-stage, an echo of that opening transparency now submerged beneath warmer, heavier materials. The dry-down is where Layton Exclusif earns its name. Laotian oud and Indonesian patchouli merge into a deep, resinous base that pulls coffee and vanilla along with it, producing a sweetness that is dark rather than gourmand. Guaiac wood and oakmoss add a slightly smoky, mossy edge that grounds the whole composition and prevents it from reading as a sweet oriental. Sandalwood contributes a creamy warmth underneath, softening the oud without diluting it. Amber ties the base materials together, giving the drydown a glowing, almost burnished quality. Leather sits at the foundation, dry and clean rather than medicinal, adding structure without turning the base harsh. The whole base hangs together as something genuinely opulent: animalic but refined, dark but never suffocating. Those who loved Layton's brightness may find Exclusif takes some adjustment. Those who wanted Layton to go darker will find exactly what they were after.

Layton Exclusif belongs to autumn and winter evenings: formal dinners, wedding receptions, and corporate events in cooler months where a fragrance that commands a room is appropriate. It is not built for Dhaka humidity in July. Reach for it when the air is cool and the setting warrants something with real weight.
