When Rabanne set out to remake the 1 Million line into something genuinely sophisticated, the result was 1 Million Royal Parfum, launched in 2023. It keeps the gold-brick showmanship of its lineage but strips out the sweetness overload in favour of a darker, more resinous character. Perfumers Quentin Bisch and Christophe Raynaud built it on a benzoin-and-patchouli foundation that earns the 'Royal' name. The Scent
Cardamom arrives first, sharp and slightly citrus-adjacent, backed by tangerine and a clean bergamot that keeps things from going syrupy. There is a faint bubblegum quality in the first few minutes that can surprise wearers who expect pure formality from a Parfum concentration. It is not a deal-breaker, and it fades quickly. Within ten to fifteen minutes, lavender steps forward and begins to sweeten. This is not a fresh barbershop lavender but a candied one, nudged in that direction by violet leaf, which adds a soft, almost powdery fruitiness. Sage runs underneath the lavender, giving the heart a slightly herbal, green edge that keeps it from becoming a pure gourmand.
As the heart settles, the interplay between cardamom and lavender becomes more apparent: the spice cools slightly while the floral warms, meeting somewhere in the middle before the base begins to assert itself. Violet leaf continues to hover at the edges, lending a quiet, almost dewy quality that softens the transition. Sage gradually recedes but leaves a faint herbal signature that prevents the composition from tipping fully into sweetness.
The dry-down is where 1 Million Royal makes its strongest argument. Benzoin takes over the base and brings a warm, fuzzy vanilla-amber richness that is distinct from simple vanilla. It has a resinous depth, almost incense-adjacent but not smoky. Cedar arrives alongside it, adding a dry, lightly peppery woodiness that gives structure to what could otherwise become too plush. Patchouli anchors everything, adding an earthy, dark thread that pulls the scent away from sweetness and toward something more brooding. By the time the fragrance has fully settled on skin, you are wearing something that sits between an oriental amber and a spiced woody. A close comparison is Moustache EDP by Rochas, which shares the mandarin-benzoin-patchouli axis, though Royal leans cooler and more cardamom-forward.
