How is N°5 L'Eau different from the original N°5?
Olivier Polge keeps the aldehydic bouquet recognisable but makes it lighter and more citrus-forward, with lemon, neroli and bergamot up top and a clean white-musk base. It is a fresher, daylight-friendly reading of the icon rather than a watered-down copy of the classic.
Why is Olivier Polge credited here and not Ernest Beaux?
Ernest Beaux created the 1921 original N°5. This 2016 flanker was Olivier Polge's first take on the house icon, so the historic name belongs to the original while L'Eau is a modern reinterpretation by the current Chanel in-house perfumer.

Notes, the scent, when to wear, and who it is for.

Taking apart the most famous perfume in the world is a risk, and Chanel handed it to Olivier Polge as his first go at the icon. N°5 L'Eau arrived in 2016 as an eau de toilette flanker of Chanel N°5, built to keep the aldehydic bouquet recognisable while making it lighter, more citrus-forward, and easier to wear in daylight. Lily-Rose Depp fronted the campaign and the target was obvious. Aromatica lists the N°5 L'Eau price in Bangladesh alongside the original, which makes comparing them straightforward.

The Scent

The citrus is the tell. No other version of N°5 opens this way, with lemon, mandarin and orange laid over aldehydes that have been dialled back to a shimmer instead of the starchy, snuffed-candle brightness of the original. Neroli sits in that opening too and gives it a soft, almost meringue-like sweetness that several reviewers pick up on. The florals underneath are the familiar N°5 bouquet, ylang-ylang first, then May rose from Grasse and jasmine, but they arrive pastel and transparent rather than opulent. Where the original sets that bouquet against amber, sandalwood and vetiver, L'Eau rests it on cedar and white musk, which is the single biggest structural change and the reason it reads modern. Orris adds a fine powdery texture through the middle, and a whisper of vanilla keeps the dry-down from going cold. The community is split along predictable lines. Admirers call it the freshest and most wearable interpretation of the formula and credit Polge with preserving the identity while changing the tone, and one common shorthand is that it smells like N°5 crossed with Coco Mademoiselle minus the patchouli. Detractors find it thin next to the eau de parfum, missing the aldehydic drama that makes N°5 what it is, and a few report a faint fruity edge they dislike. Both readings are fair, and which one you land on depends almost entirely on whether you want the original softened or replaced. Context helps here. N°5 has been reinterpreted repeatedly since the 1921 extrait, through the 1986 eau de parfum and the 2008 Eau Premiere, and L'Eau is the furthest any of them has moved from Ernest Beaux's structure. In warm, humid weather that lightness is an advantage, since the eau de parfum can feel heavy in Dhaka in a way this does not.

When to Wear

Spring and summer, and it belongs to daytime rather than after dark. Office hours, lunches, and warm-weather occasions where you want something elegant without the weight of a classic aldehydic floral. Aromatica's spring collection is the closest fit in mood.

Who Is It For

Someone who respects N°5 but finds the eau de parfum too formal for a working day. It also suits younger wearers who want the Chanel signature without the vintage weight that comes with the original.
