Escentric Molecules Molecule 05

Cashmeran is one of the odder molecules in the perfumer's kit, warm and woody and musky at once with a resinous pine streak running through it. Molecule 05 is Geza Schoen's 2020 eau de toilette containing that molecule and nothing else, following the same one-material logic as the rest of the Escentric Molecules line. The Scent

Cashmeran has an unusually complicated character for a single molecule, which is why Schoen chose it. It is dry hay and earthy green at the same time, with a woody backbone that sits close to cedar and vetiver, and a soft musky fuzz over the top that gives it the cashmere reference in its name. There is a thin resinous pine note underneath that appears and disappears depending on temperature and skin. The fragrance is linear by construction, so what you smell in the first ten minutes is what you get for the rest of the wear, only quieter. Projection is moderate at best. This is where the reviews stop agreeing. One camp finds it clean and skin-like, describing a soft, faintly soapy warmth that works as an everyday base layer. The other camp finds it musty. Reviewers in that group use words like damp basement, mould, and laundry pulled out of the machine still wet, and one calls it dirty in a way they did not expect from the marketing. A third reading, common among people who own several from the line, is that Molecule 05 is more useful as a layering material than as a fragrance you wear alone, since it thickens and grounds whatever you put over it. Comparisons come up to Comme des Garçons Wonderoud rather than to anything in the designer world. Cashmeran itself is cheap and widely available, and a recurring complaint from people who make their own blends is that they cannot see the value in buying it bottled. That criticism is fair on materials and misses the point on packaging and convenience, which is a decision each buyer makes for themselves.
