Common Questions
Good to know
-
Matiere Noire runs Laotian oud, blackcurrant, narcissus, jasmine sambac, rose, cyclamen, patchouli and incense in a thin, airy structure where narcissus leads and oud stays understated. Jean Lowe Matiere reproduces most of that outline minus the blackcurrant, but pushes oud, patchouli and frankincense harder, giving it a denser, more resinous dry-down than the original it echoes.
-
Both, in sequence. It opens genuinely floral, narcissus and indolic jasmine, then rose and watery cyclamen through the heart, but oud, patchouli and frankincense rise underneath as it develops. By the dry-down the flowers have mostly given way to a dry, resinous woody-incense base with only a thread of jasmine remaining.
-
Warmth amplifies the indolic side of jasmine and the hay-like edge of narcissus, so the floral heart turns heavier and more animalic on a humid day than it does in cool air. Frankincense and patchouli underneath hold their shape well in heat, keeping the whole composition from souring even as the florals intensify.
-
Eclat de Lune pursues its own separate character within Maison Alhambra's catalogue, while Jean Lowe Matiere is defined by its narcissus-jasmine opening moving into rose, cyclamen, oud, patchouli and frankincense, positioning it as one of the house's darker, more resinous floral-oud reworkings.
-
Because the fragrance shifts meaningfully from a floral opening to a resinous oud dry-down, a decant lets you experience that full transformation before deciding whether the transition from narcissus and jasmine to oud and frankincense works for your taste, rather than judging it off the opening alone.
