The Scent
Plum announces itself first, jammy and a little boozy, cut by a sliver of grapefruit that keeps the opening from turning syrupy. That citrus flash is brief. Within minutes the fruit starts to soften and sink into a powdery heliotrope note that changes the entire mood, pulling the composition from bright to hushed. Orchid sits underneath the heliotrope, adding a waxy, slightly creamy texture rather than a floral one, so this never reads as a flower fragrance. As the top notes fade, the base starts pushing upward: benzoin and labdanum arrive together, resinous and warm, and they are what carry the fragrance into its second hour. Tonka bean folds in next, bringing a soft almond-hay sweetness that blurs into the vanilla rather than competing with it. The agarwood is not the smoky, medicinal oud some houses lean on. Here it stays low and woody, more of a dry undertone than a spotlight note, which is the fragrance's most interesting choice. Some noses catch a faint dark-fruit echo returning in the far dry-down, where the plum seems to resurface through the amber. By the final stretch, Eternal Oud settles into a warm, sweet, resinous amber with enough oud grain to keep it from tipping into pure dessert territory. The transition between the heliotrope and the resins is gradual rather than abrupt, so there is a stretch in the middle where the powder, the wax of the orchid, and the first traces of benzoin overlap on the skin at once. Vanilla threads through this middle phase quietly, rounding the edges of the labdanum before tonka bean gives it that hay-like depth. Amber holds the whole base together, acting less like a single note and more like the frame the benzoin, labdanum, tonka, and agarwood are all painted onto. Skin chemistry seems to decide how present the grapefruit and plum echo becomes later on, with some wearers noticing the fruit fold almost entirely into the amber and others still catching traces of it near the resinous close. Toward the end, the agarwood and vanilla sit closest together, the wood drying out what could otherwise feel like a purely sweet finish.
