How is this different from Myrrh & Tonka?
They are the two warm entries in the Cologne Intense range, and they get there differently. Myrrh & Tonka opens on lavender and lands on a smoky myrrh resin over tonka, vanilla and almond, so it reads balsamic and a little churchy. This one runs cardamom and grapefruit tea into a dry, teak-like vetiver, with the bourbon vanilla underneath kept restrained rather than dessert-sweet.
Does Cologne Intense mean it is stronger than a regular Jo Malone cologne?
It means a different build, not simply more of the same. The Cologne Intense range sits at eau de parfum concentration and is written around heavier materials, resins, woods and vanillas, where the standard colognes are built on citrus and light florals. That is why this one has a real vetiver-and-vanilla floor under the cardamom instead of resolving into freshness.
What happens to the cardamom-grapefruit opening in Dhaka's humidity?
It turns earthier and drier rather than fresher. This is already the warm, teak-like reading of the root rather than the cool grassy one, and heat pushes it further that way. Cardamom and grapefruit tea lift and fade quickly here, so you reach the vetiver sooner, and the bourbon vanilla underneath thickens as skin warms.
Is this too masculine-leaning for someone who wants a soft vanilla?
Not really, because the vanilla here is deliberately restrained. Cardamom and grapefruit tea open bright, but the vetiver bourbon and vanilla bourbon in the base hold a steady balance rather than either taking over, so it reads earthy-sweet rather than gourmand or floral. Anyone wanting a straightforward soft vanilla should look elsewhere; anyone wanting vanilla with backbone will find it here.

Notes, the scent, when to wear, and who it is for.

Built around the tension between cool earth and warm sugar, Jo Malone London Vetiver & Golden Vanilla (Cologne Intense, 2020) takes a famously masculine root note and gives it a soft, luminous edge. It reads clean and grown-up, not a dessert. Aromatica carries the Jo Malone Vetiver & Golden Vanilla decant in Bangladesh in all available sizes, so you can test how the dry vetiver and the bourbon vanilla settle on your own skin.

The Scent

Cardamom announces itself first, bright and a little sharp, with a citrus-tea freshness pulled straight from the grapefruit tea note. One memorable detail: the opening can flash almost boozy, a quick lift that reads almost like tequila before it calms. Within a few minutes the cardamom turns warmer and softer, and the vetiver pushes through underneath. This is not the cold, grassy vetiver of a classic green cologne. Here it reads warm, dry, and almost woody, closer to teak than to fresh-cut lawn, with the bourbon facet lending a faint smoky edge. As the middle settles, the grapefruit tea gradually recedes, its citrus brightness thinning into a pale shimmer before disappearing entirely, and the vetiver bourbon takes the lead, carrying that earthy, slightly toasted warmth forward. The cardamom, meanwhile, has softened from its snappy opening into something closer to a gentle spiced hum underneath the roots. Then the vanilla bourbon rises to meet the vetiver, and the two notes hold a steady balance rather than one swallowing the other. The vanilla is the surprise of the composition: it is luminous but not gourmand or syrupy, more like a soft golden glow around the roots than a scoop of dessert. There is also a quiet aromatic touch in the background, a herbal lift that keeps the sweetness in check and stops the vanilla from ever tipping sweet. The dry-down is where it earns its name, vetiver and vanilla braided into something earthy and smooth at once, the cardamom long gone and the grapefruit only a memory. It can read gentle and rounded or firmly woody depending on skin, with the vanilla pulling it one way and the dry spice pulling the other. Either way the late hours stay close to the skin and keep that earth-and-sugar contrast going.

When to Wear

This suits cool autumn and winter, when the warm vanilla has room to bloom without turning heavy. Reach for it at the office or a relaxed dinner, or a long weekend errand run, when you want polish without announcing yourself. It also sits comfortably in our Woody edit if you like vetiver at the center.

Who Is It For

Drawn to dry, earthy vetiver with a soft golden warmth folded in, and who prefers vanilla restrained rather than sweet, this is a scent that rewards patience through the dry-down.

If you enjoy Wood Sage & Sea Salt, it shares the same clean, mineral-woody British character and is worth comparing, while Myrrh & Tonka leans into the warmer, sweeter side of the same house. Browse the full Jo Malone collection at Aromatica.
