Description - Tempo
Polished and clean, dialled for routine. Diptyque Tempo EDP decant from ৳1,371, shipped across Bangladesh. Notes of clary sage, cedarwood an

Patchouli has a reputation for being loud and a little dated, and Tempo sets out to prove otherwise. This 2018 eau de parfum from Diptyque, composed by Olivier Pescheux, was released for the house's fiftieth anniversary and built around three different patchouli extracts from Sulawesi. The result is a patchouli with the hippie, head-shop associations sanded off, smooth and woody instead of raw. Anyone curious about the Tempo decant in Bangladesh will find it at Aromatica, and it makes a strong case for patchouli as something refined rather than heavy.

Fragrance Notes

Top: Bergamot, Violet Leaf, Pink Pepper

Heart: Clary Sage, Mate, Patchouli

Base: Patchouli, Cedarwood, Woody Notes

The Scent

The first few minutes are greener than you might expect from a patchouli scent, with violet leaf bringing a watery, slightly sharp freshness and pink pepper adding a light spice. Bergamot keeps the top bright before the patchouli moves in. What sets Tempo apart is how smooth and polished the patchouli reads, more woody and translucent than earthy or dank. Clary sage and mate weave a dry, herbal, almost tea-like quality through the heart that lifts the patchouli and keeps it from sitting heavy. The mate is easy to miss, but it is doing quiet work, giving the patchouli a grassy, sun-dried lift that most soft patchoulis lack. Some reviewers pick up a soft cocoa or cacao-dust nuance as it develops, a gentle sweetness rather than a gourmand one. The base is cedar and clean woods, keeping the whole thing structured and calm. Sprayed generously, it gains a bit more presence in the first hour before drawing closer to the skin. It is a fairly linear fragrance, and that is part of the appeal: it starts as refined patchouli and stays that way. Opinion divides on that point, with some finding it meditative and others finding it a touch boring. It draws frequent comparison to Chanel Coromandel, sharing a smooth patchouli character, though Tempo runs drier and less sweet. Worn into the evening it grows quieter and more skin-close, the woods and cedar carrying the last few hours. It reads as a texture more than a statement.

When to Wear

Tempo leans toward fall and winter, when its woody, slightly cocoa-tinged patchouli feels most at home. It carries well as a casual daily scent and holds up at the office, then settles nicely into evenings. Explore more like it in the woody collection at Aromatica.

Who Is It For

It fits someone who wants to wear patchouli without smelling like incense smoke or a market stall. It also suits anyone who already owns Coromandel and wants a drier, more affordable way to scratch the same itch. If you like woody scents and have been wary of patchouli, Tempo is one of the gentlest ways in.

If you enjoy this, Coromandel sits in the same smooth-patchouli family and is worth comparing. Browse the full Diptyque collection at Aromatica.
