Giorgio Armani Si

Si is the 2013 Giorgio Armani eau de parfum composed by Christine Nagel and launched with Cate Blanchett as its face, the original that every later Si flanker grows from. The Scent

Cassis leads, and it is the defining note. It reads as concentrated blackcurrant, juicy with a slightly tart, leafy edge, and it carries through far longer than most fruit openings do.

May rose and freesia form a light, airy heart. The rose is fresh rather than jammy, and freesia gives it a clean, peppery lift that stops the cassis from becoming cloying.

The base is where Si earns its chypre label. Patchouli gives an earthy backbone and ambroxan adds a dry, slightly salty warmth, while vanilla softens everything into a smooth, sweet finish. The balance between that vanilla and the patchouli is what made it a template for the fruity chypres that followed.

What makes Si easy to recognise is how long the cassis stays in view. In most fruity fragrances the fruit is a top note that disappears into the floral heart; here the blackcurrant threads through the rose and is still faintly there when the vanilla takes over. That persistence is the signature, and it is also why the scent divides opinion: to some it is a polished fruit-and-vanilla glow, to others the cassis is too syrupy.

A dressed-up everyday fragrance. Si works from daytime through dinner, and the cassis keeps it from feeling too heavy in cooler weather. It is happiest from November to February. In the peak of a Bangladeshi summer the vanilla and cassis can feel syrupy, so lighter application helps. On warm days a single spray to the wrist or neck keeps the cassis bright without letting the vanilla build up.
