Common Questions
Good to know
-
It means Mitsouko predates the entire modern idea of a chypre, and later green, mossy fragrances are answering a template this one set. The dry peach against oakmoss, vetiver and cinnamon reads unlike anything in current perfumery precisely because it was built before those conventions existed. Wearing it is closer to hearing the original recording than a cover version.
-
Dryad is what a green chypre looks like when someone builds one now, and Mitsouko is the thing it is answering. Dryad opens sharper, galbanum and tarragon rather than bergamot and citrus, and its heart is narcissus and orris where Mitsouko's is that famous dry peach. Both land on oakmoss and vetiver. Mitsouko is the more austere and the more difficult of the two, and Dryad is greener and easier on a first wearing.
-
Not especially, and it is not trying to be. The peach here is dry and skin-like rather than sweet, and the oakmoss-vetiver-cinnamon base reads austere and mossy rather than comforting. It can read lush on one skin and stripped-back and bone-dry on another. Newcomers expecting instant likeability may struggle; those drawn to demanding, historically significant perfumery will find it rewarding.
-
This is an acquired taste rather than a crowd-pleaser, and how much fruit versus moss you get depends heavily on your own skin chemistry, sometimes ripe and vivid, sometimes stripped back and austere. A decant lets you spend real time with both readings before deciding whether a genuine 1919 chypre earns a permanent place in your collection.
