How is the original different from the Vetiver flanker?
The original is the classic citrus and calone aquatic with a light spicy, woody base. The Vetiver version keeps the fresh opening but pushes an earthy, green vetiver much further into the foreground, so it reads drier and more grounded. If you want the pure aquatic reference, the original is the one to start with.
Does it perform in humidity, or disappear in the heat?
It is built for heat. The yuzu and calone structure was designed to feel cool and airy, so humidity tends to lift the fresh notes rather than flatten them. It stays close to the skin as the day goes on, which is part of why it works so well as a warm weather daily rather than a statement scent.

Notes, the scent, when to wear, and who it is for.

Some scents define a decade so completely that they stop sounding dated and start sounding like a reference point. L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme, the 1994 eau de toilette composed by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, is one of them. It is a woody aquatic that opens on yuzu and cool calone, clean as sea air moving over warm skin.

Full note breakdown on Fragrantica.

The Scent

The opening is famously crisp. Yuzu, lemon and bergamot give a sharp citrus jolt, lemon verbena and coriander add a green herbal edge, and calone brings that unmistakable watery, melon-skin freshness that made the style so influential. Cypress and sage keep it dry and slightly bracing rather than sweet.

Where it gets interesting is the transition. The heart turns quietly spicy, with nutmeg and Ceylon cinnamon warming the aquatic notes and blue lotus and lily-of-the-valley softening them into something almost floral. Then the base arrives, and the aquatic freshness settles onto Tahitian vetiver, cedar, sandalwood and a thread of tobacco. That woody, faintly smoky finish is what keeps the fragrance from feeling like a simple summer splash. It goes clean, then warm, then grounded.

Calone is the note doing most of the historical work here, the same synthetic that gave Davidoff Cool Water its watery signature a few years earlier, and the Fragrance Foundation named this Men's Fragrance of the Year not long after release. Performance is honest rather than dramatic, sitting close to the skin once the citrus opening fades and announcing itself when you move rather than filling a room. How long that softer stage lasts depends a lot on skin type and climate, and it behaves best as a considered daytime scent rather than something meant to carry all evening.

When to Wear

This is a spring and summer staple. It is tailor made for hot days, working equally well at the office and for anything casual in the sun, and the clean profile makes it an easy compliment to give and receive in close quarters. It reads a little thin in deep cold. Because it sits close to the skin rather than projecting outward, it also suits shared workspaces and air conditioned offices.

Who Is It For

For the person who wants a fresh, versatile signature that offends nobody and still has a bit of depth. If you like aquatic and citrus scents but find many of them one dimensional, the spicy, woody drydown here gives you somewhere to go. It also suits anyone who wants their fragrance to read as personal rather than broadcast, since the closer wear once the top notes settle rewards someone standing near you rather than a whole room.

For more in this vein, the L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Vetiver flanker takes the same base earthier, and Davidoff Cool Water is its natural companion from the same aquatic wave. Explore the Issey Miyake range, or our aquatic and ozonic collection for similar fresh scents.

L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme is available as a decant in 3ml, 5ml, 9ml and 15ml sizes.
