What is La Collection 1886 supposed to smell like?
A warm, powdery gourmand with a milk-tea twist. Bergamot and mate open it, an orris-and-tonka heart adds creamy spice, and a base of white chocolate, vanilla and white tobacco keeps it soft and cosy. Reviewers reach for different comparisons and none has really stuck, so it is best taken on its own terms.
Is the white chocolate note sweet or unusual?
Unusual. Rather than a straight dessert chocolate, it reads creamy and faintly bitter against a lipstick-like iris and the mate tea, which gives 1886 a powdery, grown-up feel instead of a simple sweet gourmand. That is a large part of why it is often called one of the more distinctive Lattafa releases.

Notes, the scent, when to wear, and who it is for.

Lattafa built its La Collection d'Antiquites line around specific years, and 1886 is the one that leans into orris and warm gourmand comfort rather than the sharp oud the brand is known for. Released in 2023 as part of the Lattafa Pride range, it opens aromatic and slightly bitter before settling into something closer to a cashmere sweater than a cologne. Aromatica carries the La Collection d'Antiquites 1886 decant in Bangladesh in all available sizes, so you can spend real time with it before deciding if the iris-and-tonka pairing works on your skin.

Full note breakdown on Fragrantica.

The Scent

The first thing the nose catches is bergamot cut with mate, a slightly bitter, tea-like accord that keeps the opening from tipping into sweetness too early. It reads sharp and green for a few minutes, almost herbal, before orris starts to surface underneath. That orris is the backbone of this fragrance. It brings a powdery, slightly cool iris facet that softens the bergamot's edge and gives the whole composition a suede-like texture. Jasmine threads through at the same stage, adding a touch of white floral lift without turning the scent overtly floral. Cinnamon and bark notes show up next, warming the mix and pulling it toward spice rather than perfume-counter sweetness. This is the point where the fragrance splits opinion: some skin chemistries push the cinnamon forward into a drier, almost woody spice, while others let tonka take over faster and the whole thing reads sweeter, closer to a dessert. Both directions are legitimate readings of the same bottle. As it moves into the base, white chocolate and vanilla arrive together and turn the character unmistakably gourmand, but white tobacco keeps it from becoming syrupy by adding a leafy, slightly dry counterpoint. Patchouli and white musk close things out, grounding the sweetness in something earthier and cleaner at once. The dry-down is where the orris and tonka finally meet in full, and what's left is a soft, skin-hugging blend of powdery iris and creamy vanilla with enough spice to keep it interesting.

When to Wear

This suits cold-weather evenings, the kind spent at a dinner table or in a room with low light rather than out in the sun. Think a winter wedding reception, a late dinner with people you actually want to talk to, or a quiet night where you want to smell put-together without trying hard. It belongs to the Lattafa collection at Aromatica for exactly this kind of occasion.

Who Is It For

This suits someone who reaches for powdery, spice-forward gourmands over anything fruity or aquatic, and who wants a scent that reads mature without being stiff.
