The Scent

It opens on incense and leather together, dry and smoky rather than sweet. The incense is the clean, resinous kind you smell near a lit stick, not the heavy church smoke of older ouds. The leather sits right under it and gives the opening some grip. There is a slight metallic edge in the first minutes that some wearers notice straight out of a new bottle.

The heart is myrrh and patchouli. Myrrh adds a soft, slightly powdery resin, and patchouli brings an earthy depth that keeps the smoke from floating off. This is the stage where the Bottled Absolu likeness is strongest. Reviewers on the Fragrantica page do not agree on how close it gets. Some call it smoother and a touch sweeter than the Boss. Others say it misses the ambery myrrh that makes Absolu warm and reads drier and spicier instead.

The drydown is cedar and davana. Cedar gives a clean woody frame, and davana adds a faint fruity, boozy softness that rounds the finish.
