The Scent

Black currant cuts through almost immediately, adding a tart, jammy fruitiness that keeps the booze from going flat, while a thread of bergamot lifts the edges and adds a faint citrus brightness. It can read as a serious, grown-up boozy scent or veer toward a playful, almost tropical sweetness closer to fruity cocktails than a smoky bar, depending on skin. The amaretto stays almond-sweet and marzipan-like through this stretch, which is part of what tips it toward dessert for some noses. After the first half hour, amber settles in and starts pulling everything warmer and rounder, and the sharp alcoholic bite of the opening softens into a glowing warmth.
