Smoke is the premise, but what arrives on skin is far more layered than the name lets on. Ecrin de Fumee, which translates roughly to "jewel box of smoke," is Serge Lutens' 2023 Eau de Parfum contribution to the Collection Noire, created with longtime collaborator Christopher Sheldrake. It is a unisex composition that leans dark and decadent, a fragrance for anyone drawn to the kind of pleasure that has an edge of excess. Aromatica carries the Serge Lutens Ecrin de Fumee decant in Bangladesh in all available sizes.
Fragrance Notes
Top: Smoke, Rum
Heart: Cacao, Tobacco
Base: Woody Notes
The Scent
Smoke arrives first, dry and immediate, like the air near a recently extinguished candle. Within moments, rum cuts through, not sweet or tropical, but sharp and alcoholic, the kind of rum that stings the back of the throat. Genuinely surprising for a Serge Lutens: the opening is almost abrasive, a little raw, and that sourish boozy quality is quite deliberate. Give it five minutes and the picture starts to soften. Cacao begins to emerge beneath the smoke and alcohol, and it is not the sweet milk-chocolate variety. This is bitter cocoa powder, dark and dry, the sort that dusts the top of a serious espresso. The tobacco slides in alongside it, pipe-tobacco warm rather than cigarette-harsh, and the combination of cacao and tobacco in the mid-section is where the fragrance finds its most compelling form. There is a powdery quality that builds gradually, rounding off the sharpest edges without eliminating the darkness. The woody base is understated but essential, giving the whole composition a grounded, slightly resinous character so the sweetness never tips into gourmand territory. The way the woody notes anchor the composition matters more than their volume; they act as ballast, preventing the rum and cacao from drifting into something saccharine or unmoored. The dry-down is quieter than the opening would suggest, settling into a soft, smoky chocolate warmth that stays close to the skin. Some wearers find the boozy opening polarizing; once it resolves into the cacao-tobacco heart, that initial hesitation is usually forgotten. The transition from the raw, alcoholic top to the composed, bitter-sweet middle is what makes this worth wearing past the first spray. It does not announce itself loudly in the drydown, but it holds its shape, and the smoke thread that opened the whole experience never fully disappears. This is a fragrance that genuinely evolves on skin and rewards the patience to wear it past the first fifteen minutes.
When to Wear
Ecrin de Fumee belongs to cool-weather evenings, autumn dinners, low-lit bars, and the kind of occasions where a fragrance is meant to be noticed up close rather than across a room. It sits well in the Incense and Smoke collection if you are drawn to dark, contemplative scents for winter nights.
Who Is It For
Someone with a taste for dark, unconventional gourmands who finds most chocolate fragrances too sweet and most tobacco fragrances too literal will find exactly what they have been looking for here.
If you enjoy Ambre Sultan, the same house's deep and resinous work, Ecrin de Fumee sits in a related territory but replaces amber's sweetness with smoke and chocolate. Browse the full Serge Lutens collection at Aromatica.
