How does Bois Imperial compare to Orange x Santal?
Orange x Santal pairs its wood with bright citrus for a fruitier opening, while Bois Imperial strips away fruit entirely, building its whole identity around vetiver, Akigalawood and patchouli for a purely woody, radiant result with no sweetness to soften it.
What makes the wood note smell so distinctive?
Akigalawood, a captive lab material with a peppery, woody-patchouli character. It builds almost the whole scent, framed by Thai basil, timut pepper and vetiver, so it comes across as a smooth, radiant blond wood rather than a dark or smoky one.
Is a fragrance built on one wood note going to feel one-dimensional?
It stays focused rather than flat, since Thai basil and timut pepper add a green, peppery lift up top and vetiver and patchouli deepen the base, giving the wood note room to shift rather than sitting still. Anyone wanting more variety across the wear may still find it narrower than a multi-accord fragrance.
Does the peppery wood accord hold up in Dhaka's heat?
Thai basil and timut pepper both fade faster in heat and humidity, softening the sharp opening sooner than in cooler weather. The Akigalawood-patchouli-ambrofix base stays stable regardless of temperature, so on hot days this settles into its radiant woody core earlier, with less of the peppery bite up front.

Notes, the scent, when to wear, and who it is for.

Essential Parfums built its reputation on stripping fragrance down to a single loud idea, and Bois Imperial, released in 2020 as an Eau de Parfum by perfumer Quentin Bisch, is the clearest proof of that philosophy. It takes one material, wood, and pushes it until the whole composition vibrates around it. There is no fruit to soften the edges and no vanilla to round it out. Aromatica carries the Bois Imperial decant in Bangladesh in all available sizes, and it is easy to see why this one keeps getting requested by people who tried a sample somewhere else first. The house calls its approach "conscious luxury," refillable bottles and clean formulas, but the scent itself makes no apologies for being intense.

Fragrance Notes

Top: Thai Basil, Timut Pepper

Heart: Vetiver, Georgywood, Petalia

Base: Akigalawood, Patchouli, Ambrofix

Full note breakdown on Fragrantica.

The Scent

Thai basil is the first thing the nose catches, green and slightly anisic, crushed rather than fresh from the stem. Timut pepper follows almost immediately, and this is where people expect black pepper's heat and get grapefruit instead. That citrus-pepper flicker is the signature opening move of this fragrance, sparkling for a few minutes before it folds into something darker. As the top fades, Haitian vetiver takes over, earthy and a little smoky, and it is joined by Georgywood, a cedar-focused molecule that reads as sharpened, almost pencil-shaving wood rather than a soft forest note. Petalia sits underneath the wood accord and adds a quiet floral haze, not enough to call this a floral fragrance but enough to keep the dry-down from feeling purely mineral. Where the wood turns from bright to heavy is the real turning point on skin. Akigalawood, an upcycled patchouli derivative, brings a dark, slightly leathery depth that regular patchouli oil then thickens further. Ambrofix closes the composition with a warm, ambery skin-hug that has real staying character rather than fading into powder. Some noses pick up more incense-like smoke through the middle hours, others get a cleaner, almost soapy cedar, and both readings are accurate depending on skin chemistry. What stays consistent is the sensation of wood grain, rough at first, sanded down by the final hours into something smooth and close to the body.

When to Wear

This suits cool-weather evenings, client dinners, or a late meeting where you want the room to register you before you speak. It reads best from autumn through winter, when the wood and amber base have room to unfold instead of getting flattened by heat. For layered outfits, a blazer or a leather jacket, it feels like a natural extension of the fabric. Who Is It For

Built for someone who already owns a rotation of safe, easy scents and wants one that argues back a little. It fits a person who reads "woody" on a label and wants to actually smell the wood, not a suggestion of it.

If you enjoy Orange x Santal, another Essential Parfums composition built around a single loud idea, it is worth comparing side by side. Browse the full Essential Parfums collection at Aromatica.
